[elevator] [cerberus]

[ When you open your eyes again the first thing that you, and your teammates, may notice is that you are confined within an iron cage, rectangle in shape. Further inspection will reveal that outside of the cage is a large structure of sorts, reaching far above you. It kind of looks like an unfinished clock tower, really... there are spots that look finished and bolted tightly, and others that look like they had been left once and the work never thought of again.

Also, it's pretty chilly. You might get to notice that.

It's foggy and windy—the kind of wind that howls and roars, jostling your cage against the tall shaft, and every so often you feel as though you might have had the ghost of a raindrop on you. The tower-like build creaks horribly ominously in the wind, and you can see the rusted metals swaying slightly. But if you decide to look around...

Flapping above you (and not helping with the wind) is a harpy-like creature, iron chains wrapped around their talons. Though, maybe it's more like a lion? The chains are bolted to the top of your cage. There are also little indicators on the structure, the same distance apart, that seem to be declaring different levels or heights. They look horribly unhappy to be here, but they're also impressive at ignoring any call you might have for them.

There's a door to the cage, but it won't open, even if it's just a simple-looking locking mechanism. If you peer out, it's too foggy on the ground to make out very much, but you can make out nine other, tower-like structures with similarly flapping harpies. Each one, including your own, has an emblazoned emblem of every team's patron monster, so that you can see where everyone is—it's just difficult to make out exactly who may be in each one. Even more difficult to try and communicate like this.

Attached to the door is an aged metal panel with a screen and four buttons; two to choose between the team names that appear on the dark green and black screen, and two to choose whether you wish for that team to go up or down.

After a moment, a little speaker in the corner starts playing an incredibly bad quality version of this.]

[Drops down and wraps their arms around him]

They - they stopped, they're still here.

[I'm sorry Selena he has to cry this out a little apparently. He tries to say something that isn't crying, at first, and instantly gives up on that, because it's not happening. He leans into their arms gratefully, though.]

[that's okay buddy i got you, holding him tight until he's done]

There are still things we can do for them. We've still got time, so cry as much as you need.

[Buried in the tears, he makes a sharp scoffing noise, like he can't decide if he wants to laugh or grumble, and even if he could decide he wouldn't manage it anyway around all the crying. But it is beginning to gradually die down.]

Feeling calmer?

[Once he's entirely stopped and is just breathing raggedly, but can speak:]

I'm so embarrassed. It's always . . . what a pain.

This is a perfectly reasonable situation to cry in, there's no reason to be embarrassed for worrying about people important to you.

I only—I hate how it feels. I know none of you judge me for it. . . . All right. I have some math to do.

I get that. Even when nobody judges you, I know it's rough.

I've been trying to figure out the maths too. It looks like most teams are trying to minimise damage. There's only one that didn't vote for the lowest teams. Someone raised Nymph, but that's only one person who could be going for the highest teams. Kraken most likely only got up this high because the other teams were trying to go for the lower ranges and they got unlucky.

If we vote kraken, and they lower themselves too, even if one team raises them it would be enough to keep them in the game. And if other teams have been lowering the highest - phoenix got four votes down, we got two in addition to ours, Nymph got two...

[never mind the other one was probably them]

...I think, the numbers could be in Kraken's favour this time.

I don't think their position is the worst possible. I don't believe any team is aiming to kill. And you would have to be aiming to kill to raise Kraken in this position. There's no ambiguity. That would make teams in the middle, like Sphinx and Bugbear, in more danger than Kraken is . . .

But. Then there's the possibility that the game ends with no one hitting the top, and Kraken is still on the highest level. I can't allow that, either.

Yeah, even if they're not on the 13th floor, the rules say the highest team will suffer no matter how high...

Do you think the middle teams are in danger though? If all but one team has been voting to minimise and going for the lowest, being in the middle might be the safest place not to get dogpiled.

I don't know . . . it depends on how devoted people are to protecting the teams that have been protected until now. How do you feel? Personally. If I suggested we raise Tsuchigumo this round, what would you say to that?

I wouldn't love it. I'd prefer to go for Yatagarasu again, or...

It's a cruel suggestion, but if we ensure Kraken survives this round, then raising Basilisk might take the heat off them next round. It would mean giving up on any plan to minimise harm across the board, and I know several in our group would object to such an aggressive approach.

[honestly it makes selena feel a bit nauseous to even be suggesting it]

[He nods, very slowly.]

I understand . . . I don't know that we can convince anyone of that. And the rankings change so quickly. I'm concerned for ourselves as well. But that will be easier to bring up in the final round, when the reality is right before us.

If we don't do it now, it might be too late to make a difference for Kraken in the last round.
