[elevator] [sphinx]

[ When you open your eyes again the first thing that you, and your teammates, may notice is that you are confined within an iron cage, rectangle in shape. Further inspection will reveal that outside of the cage is a large structure of sorts, reaching far above you. It kind of looks like an unfinished clock tower, really... there are spots that look finished and bolted tightly, and others that look like they had been left once and the work never thought of again.

Also, it's pretty chilly. You might get to notice that.

It's foggy and windy—the kind of wind that howls and roars, jostling your cage against the tall shaft, and every so often you feel as though you might have had the ghost of a raindrop on you. The tower-like build creaks horribly ominously in the wind, and you can see the rusted metals swaying slightly. But if you decide to look around...

Flapping above you (and not helping with the wind) is a harpy-like creature, iron chains wrapped around their talons. Though, maybe it's more like a lion? The chains are bolted to the top of your cage. There are also little indicators on the structure, the same distance apart, that seem to be declaring different levels or heights. They look horribly unhappy to be here, but they're also impressive at ignoring any call you might have for them.

There's a door to the cage, but it won't open, even if it's just a simple-looking locking mechanism. If you peer out, it's too foggy on the ground to make out very much, but you can make out nine other, tower-like structures with similarly flapping harpies. Each one, including your own, has an emblazoned emblem of every team's patron monster, so that you can see where everyone is—it's just difficult to make out exactly who may be in each one. Even more difficult to try and communicate like this.

Attached to the door is an aged metal panel with a screen and four buttons; two to choose between the team names that appear on the dark green and black screen, and two to choose whether you wish for that team to go up or down.

After a moment, a little speaker in the corner starts playing an incredibly bad quality version of this.]

I'm... I'm worried about the teams on the bottom. Everyone will be looking to raise them, won't they?

[ She's mainly looking at Basilisk. ]

Yes.

They'll likely lower the teams at 6 and raise the teams at 1.

Then maybe we should lower one of them, knowing that they might be targeted... but what if other teams are thinking the same way, and we end up lowering someone who doesn't need to be lowered any further...?

[ so many different things to consider... ]

I'm operating under the assumption that all of the other teams are going to make emotional, surface level decisions.

While trying to dissuade us from doing the same.

You... You think so? I don't know a lot of people around here, but I've met some very sharp folks... I'm not so sure everyone's going to be acting on emotions alone... Including us.

Even then, by the logic of the game, it is still "correct" in a sense to raise them. It's a surface-level decision, but not without logic underpinning it. If we want to get through this with as little loss as possible, we need to view every level between the bottom and the top as a resource and use them accordingly. Raising one or both of Basilisk and Bugbear should happen so that other teams aren't raised instead, it's if it happens more than twice that we need to preemptively start guarding against.

At any rate, trying to anticipate that other teams will anticipate what we're anticipating will just get us caught in a cycle of second guessing ourselves.

I... I suppose that's right. There's no way for us to truly know what the other teams are thinking...

[ sighs ]

So we should... Think about the teams that are more in the middle, then...?

We need to think about how many times a team can be raised before they're in severe danger, which is 10 or above, and how many times a team needs to be lowered before they can be safely raised one more time. Then try to anticipate the obvious moves people would make with the current situation and make our choice based on them.

I do have to wonder how many people think the same way. I'm not saying they're not in danger, because we all are, but how many teams will avoid them in the assumption that they are the most vulnerable targets?

But Arthur... One of them is Basilisk...

[ she knows that he knows this, but still... she sighs. This is hard. She doesn't like it. ]

Then we should listen to what the others are saying, and lower Cerberus... right?

... I am aware.

[ It looks like it hurts him to say that. ]

I know Mister Yu would have us believe 'tis a wasted effort to lower Cerberus, but they are one of the ones in the most immediate danger. It would be remiss if we did not try to aid them, especially given there is someone quite close to Da Vinci on that team. If we are to raise someone, I propose that we raise someone neither high nor low enough to draw attention.

The fact that Unicorn is as low as they are means a great many people took pity on them for being new, perhaps we might bank on the same and only raise them a small amount.

[ She looks at him for a good long while. Ori has never been one to be able to make good decisions under pressure like this. And so, she'll trust whatever it is that Arthur and Da Vinci and the others deem is the best choice. After all, they're the ones who've forged important bonds, here.

Most of her threads lead to thin air. ]

Alright. I'll vote for Cerberus, too. Mister Yu may think it's a waste, but... Everyone assuming that they would be lowered is what put them so high up in the first place, isn't it? We'll regret it if we made that assumption again, only for them to keep going up.

As for who to raise... I... worry about Unicorn, but I understand if it has to be them. Bugbear has Miss Yanfei, too, so...

I think we may yet need to work out a compromise regarding the issue of Cerberus. We shall have to see how it goes.

Gods above, I hate this.

So do I, my friend... If I could swap places with Miss Sprezzatura so that you two could at least be together here, I would in an instant.

Ori... then I would be worried about you.

But I would be alright, because you and Miss Sprezzatura would be working together to come up with a brilliant plan!
